The Mahawk,a tribe of the Northeastern Culture Area, resided in the mid-Mohawk River Valley of upstate New York and Vermont. They often tattoo their bodies with sophisticated geometric designs and men some times wear leggings. When a Mohawk boy is about 15, he begins to pluck his hair except for a strip down the middle andthen grease to stick it up. This is the famous "Mohawk" hairdo. Every fall, the Mohawk would hold a celebration to give thanks for a bountiful harvest.
